It is also relatively close to Isla Holbox, which lies 34 miles (55 kilometers) to the east (closer by water). You can reach El Cuyo by road from Cancun, Valladolid, and Merida. The journey from Cancun is approximately 2.5 - 3.5 hours by car. From Valladolid, it takes 2-3 hours, and from Merida, the journey takes approximately 3-4 hours. There are different ways to travel, either by renting a car or with a private transfer. Public transportation is also available.

In El Cuyo, telecommunications options vary considerably. For the most reliable coverage use Telcel. If you have an unlocked phone, consider purchasing a Telcel SIM card with the $200 MXN package, which includes a month of service with a decent amount of data and unlimited access to WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. You can conveniently find top-ups at the Six-shop. AT&T can sometimes provide service. Other networks like Movistar tend to have limited to no coverage at all.

When it comes to WiFi, there are three providers in the area, but even the best one can offer inconsistent coverage. The signal is transmitted via satellites, and interruptions due to factors like strong winds, rainfall, or power outages in El Cuyo are not uncommon. Elon Musk's Starlink is available at cafes Naia, Anahata, and La Hilary, along with backup generators, making them suitable spots for internet access in case your (accommodation's) WiFi is unreliable.
It's important to note that if you require guaranteed high-speed internet, El Cuyo may not be the ideal destination for you.
